Julio is Professor of Urban and Regional Planning, Head of the Department of Transport Engineering, Urban and Regional Planning at the Universidad Politécnica Madrid, and also Tenured Scientist at Spanish National Research Council CSIC (leave-of-absence).
Julio obtained his PhD from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the Universidad de Granada, Spain in 2011 (cum laude), after which he worked as an Assistant Professor at the Universidad de Zaragoza, Spain (2012-2013), a postdoctoral researcher at the Universiteit van Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2013-2015), and also as a Marie Curie postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oxford, UK (2015-2016).
His research focuses on three main research topics: (i) scenario building; (ii) spatial accessibility; (iii) environmental impact of urban mobility. Julio masters a variety of methods (both quantitative and qualitative) related to the interface between research and practice, and innovatively based on testing and validating research outcomes with intended planning users.
Julio has developed an accomplished, independent research career, being PI of EU (MSCA Doctoral Network and Horizon Europe), national (AEI), and regional R&D projects (>€4.000.000). Dr. Soria-Lara has more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, including scientific journal articles, books and book chapters. He also is frequently invited to present his ongoing activity as a distinguished researcher. Finally, he is currently Co-Chair of the Urban Mobility Thematic group at the European Conference of Transport Research Institutes (ECTRI), a scientific association of transport research groups.
Julio teaches a course on “Regional Systems” at the BSc program of Civil Engineering and two courses on “Spatial Planning” and “Advanced techniques on Spatial Planning” at the MSc program of Civil Engineering.
